Comics on the radio? Tarnation! What’ll they think of next–root beer in a bottle?

I don’t think the audio version of Ben Katchor’s “Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer” really captures the flavor of the print version. But Katchor is still great (this review that I wrote for Wired about his book “The Pleasures of Urban Decay” explains why). Katchor has received a MacArthur Fellowship. There’s even an opera called The Carbon Copy Building based on his work.

I heard a bit of The Carbon Copy Building on NPR–really loud singers yammering on about cheesecake. I didn’t exactly rush out to buy tickets. My advice: start with Katchor’s printed cartoons. If you feel the need, you can branch out to his other media later.
